About VMC
VMC - a Dutch company, developer and marketer of digital solutions, which are designed to integrate and support all aspects of infectious diseases and infection control workflow in clinical practice.
The company's mission is to improve the quality of medical care and provide a safer environment by bringing together data, technology, and people to solve critically important global healthcare problems using scalable, modern, and highly integrated applications.
Industry: Healthcare Technology
Founded: 1998
Impact: Developer of Antibiotica.app (Antibiotic Guidelines Engine), used by over 80% Dutch hospitals and dozens of hospitals across Western Europe.
About SWAB & SBIMC/BVIKM
SWAB - the Dutch working group on antibiotic policy. It aims to optimize the quality of antibiotic use in the Netherlands, thereby contributing to the control of resistance development and limiting the costs and other negative effects of antibiotic use.
SBIMC/BVIKM - Belgian Society of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology. The organization developed a national digital platform (IGGI) that provides evidence-based antimicrobial and infection management guidelines for healthcare professionals.
The Challenge: Transnational Adaptation of Pediatric Guidelines
Antibiotic resistance is a growing global threat. In the Netherlands, SWAB brought together the national medical community around a shared mission to standardize and optimize antibiotic use through clear, evidence-based clinical guidelines.
That same mission continues in Belgium through IGGI, which supports healthcare professionals with localized antimicrobial guidance tailored to Belgian practices. Both initiatives rely on Antibiotica.app, a digital platform developed by VMC.
When the initiative expanded to Belgium, local experts had already developed national guidelines for adults, but pediatric recommendations were still missing. To close this gap and accelerate the launch of the pediatric app, Dutch specialists agreed to share their clinical content. VMC took on the challenge of creating a workflow for adapting Dutch antimicrobial guidelines to the Belgian platform. As VMC’s development partner, we were excited to help bring this project to life.
Migrating medical data is no ordinary task: a single error can affect patient care. Our goal was to deliver a rapid, error-free migration, translation, and localization process, enabling the successful launch of the new Belgian pediatric guidelines within the platform.
The Solution: Drupal AI Ecosystem + Human Expertise
To meet the customer’s need for speed, security, and precision, a three-phase delivery framework was designed. It combined automation, human expertise, and built-in compliance safeguards.
Phase 1. Automated Migration Framework
One of the main technical challenges was the version gap between the two platforms: SWAB operated on Antibiotica.app 3.0, while IGGI was built on Antibiotica.app 4.0. This meant that a straightforward data transfer wasn’t possible. The structure, architecture, and data models had all evolved. Our team had to design a custom migration process that ensured compatibility, consistency, and data integrity across versions.
Phase 2. AI-Assisted Localization
Leveraging the Drupal AI ecosystem, our team accelerated multilingual content adaptation while maintaining full medical precision.
The solution automates context-aware translation of structured clinical content, ensuring consistent terminology, dosage integrity, and age-specific recommendations across healthcare systems. Designed as a repeatable workflow, this AI-driven approach can be applied to future localization initiatives, enabling rapid adaptation of medical content for new regions and platforms with minimal manual effort.
Automation of translation workflows accelerated the platform launch, saving budget and valuable time of medical specialists.
Phase 3. Proven Multi-Step Verification Process
For the project, we implemented a multi-step review workflow involving medical specialists at each stage, blending the efficiency of AI with the rigor of human validation.
To synchronize the review process, we relied on Reviewer Addon, built by VMC for Antibiotica.app. This custom tool streamlines expert feedback and accelerates the publication of verified medical guidelines. This system reduced review time, empowered real-time communication between experts, and ensured each piece of content passed multiple verification checkpoints before publication.
Through this hybrid, automation-driven approach, we enabled a secure and efficient rollout of Belgium’s first pediatric antibiotic guidelines.
Migration & Adaptation Cycle. When expert updates occurred, the system refined context and terminology, then reprocessed the content through the next review loop.
The Achievements: A Tool for International Platform Growth
The new migration and localization system proved its effectiveness by ensuring complete data accuracy, shortening release timelines, and establishing a solid foundation for future international platform rollouts.
Scalable International Framework
The new migration and localization system established a repeatable model for future rollouts, giving VMC a proven blueprint for expanding its antibiotic-guideline ecosystem across additional regions.
Faster Launch Cycles
By combining AI-assisted automation with structured validation workflows, VMC achieved a faster release timeline, reducing manual effort and accelerating time-to-market for new medical platforms.
Data Accuracy Guarantee
Thanks to the developed workflow, the content localization process achieves not only high translation speed but also proficient accuracy in the data adapted for the new platform.
